In the North Pacific Ocean there is so much plastic that an area of trash the size of France has formed. In some places it is so dense that it has even created landmasses.
With no one paying attention to this country-sized problem The Pacific Oceans Foundation & LADBible decided to do something about it, by turning the trash patch into an official country, The Trash Isles.
On World Oceans Day we submitted an application to the United Nations to recognize The Trash Isles as an official country.
Why? Because if The Trash Isles is recognized as an official country by the UN, then other countries are obliged to clean it up under the UN's environmental charters.
Having met all the criteria to become a country, we created everything an official country needs: a currency called Debris, a passport for new citizens of which Al Gore was its first, postage stamps for official correspondence and a national flag. All made from recycled materials.
